And the actor, who previously played Fantastic Four flamer the Human Torch, said he almost turned down a second stab at being a superhero because he felt the wild was calling him.
He said: 'What if the movie comes out and it’s a success and I just reject all of this? What if I want to move to the f***ing woods?'
Covered up: He looked more modest on the cover of the magazine
'For a long time all I wanted for Christmas were books about outdoor survival. I was convinced that the woods were calling me.
And he said being among nature allows him to indulge his slightly unhinged side.
He said: 'I swear to God, if you saw me when I am by myself in the woods, I’m a lunatic. I sing, I dance. I do crazy s***.
'I camped a lot, I took classes. At 18, I told myself if I don’t live in the woods by myself by the time I’m 25, I have failed.'
But while his younger self would be disappointed at the 2012 edition's choice of career, he said he gets a lot out of going in front of the camera.
He said: 'I love acting. It’s my playground, it lets me explore.
'But my happiness in this world, my level of peace, is never going to be dictated by acting.'
And it seems he has chosen the perfect profession, as he admits he loves nothing more than to blubber like a baby.
He said: 'I weep at everything. I emote. I love things so much—I just never want to dilute that.'
But despite his love for the craft, he admits he audition process very stressful, and that it even makes him blush.
Camp: His legion of fans will be excited to see Chris posing with his chest bared as he relaxed in a tent
Rugged outdoorsman: Bear Grylls and Ray Mears will be impressed to see the actor relaxing in the countrysid
He said: 'Do you know how badly I audition? Fifty percent of the time I have to walk out of the room.
'I’m naturally very pale, so I turn red and sweat. And I have to literally walk out. Sometimes mid-audition. You start having these conversations in your brain.
''Chris, don’t do this. Chris, take it easy. You’re just sitting in a room with a person saying some words, this isn’t life. And you’re letting this affect you? Shame on you.'
And as his lengthy interview continued, he also revealed he finds it hard to speak to the press.
Behind the mask: Chris male and female fans may disagree about whether he looks better in costume
He said: 'I get very nervous, if I have to present something on stage or if I’m doing press. Because it’s just you.'
And as he continued to gaze at his navel, he also revealed he believes his personality changes depending on the time of day, with the Boston native finding a strange duality in his love of his home-town basketball team and his more introspective nature.
He said: 'I think my daytime person is different than my night-time person. With my high-school buddies, we drink beer and talk sports and it’s great.
A natural pose: The silver screen favourite went for a relaxed look as he was candidly caught unwinding in the back seat
'The kids in my Buddhism class in L.A., they’re wildly intelligent, and I love being around them, but they’re not talking about the Celtics.
'And that’s part of me. It’s a strange dichotomy. I don’t mind being a certain way with some people and having this other piece of me that’s just for me.'
In another exciting revelation, Chris said he loves women who wear training shoes and walk around with wet hair.
He said: '“I like wet hair and sweatpants. I like sneakers and ponytails.
'I like girls who aren’t so la-di-da. L.A. is so la-di-da. I like girls who give me a hard time, bust my chops a little.'
His taste in women is not totally down to Earth however, as his biggest childhood crush was in fact an Oscar-winning superstar Sandra Bullock
Chris said: 'I literally had a big poster (of her).'
Do you do takeaway? Perhaps he had tired of eating cans of beans so decided to call for some Chinese food
But for any envious men out there he also said his impressive physique is not down to a magical formula or fad workout regime, but good old fashioned hard work.
He said: 'If I could just take a pill to make me full forever, I’d do it in a heartbeat.
'I hate treadmill. I do basic weights stuff – picking up weights and putting them down. There’s no P90X or some clever s*** going on.'
But there was room for one final revelation that is sure to shock comics fans - he does not believe Captain America deserves a place in the Avengers team.
He sadi: 'Not me (Captain America), just not me! I saw it and I was like Captain America has no business being on this squad!
'Iron Man is shooting f***ing missiles, Thor is calling out lightning, Hulk is ripping apart jets and I’m, like, taking the stairs.'
