With Stephen Spielberg as executive producer and co-starring Oscar-winner Anjelica Huston and former Will & Grace star Debra Messing it’s easy to see why.
But it’s the raunchy clips from the first season of Smash that is creating a buzz before the TV show has even aired.
Risque: Former American Idol contestant Katharine McPhee strips off in the new TV series Smash, which premieres on NBC on Monday night |
With song and dance numbers running through each episode Smash is bound to be compared to Glee, the hit TV series about a high school glee club.
But as scenes from the new NBC series demonstrates, this show is directed at a more adult audience.
American Idol runner-up Katharine McPhee stars as Karen Cartwright, a young actress from Iowa looking for her big break in New York City.
Photos taken from the first series, shows the 27-year-old in various states of undress.
In one picture she stares into the mirror wearing a black bra and little else. In another she is seen lying half-naked in bed with a male co-star.
McPhee’s character is in competition with a more experienced Broadway star for the role of Marilyn Monroe.
Buxom Megan Hilty plays Ivy Lynn, her major competition.
British hunk Jack Davenport stars as a director-choreographer who –according to NBC’s website – is a ‘seductive bad boy’.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the British actor said of his character: ‘He's a creative guy who doesn't care whose feelings get hurt on the way to realising his vision.’
Former Will & Grace star Debra Messing appears as writer Julia Houston – a working mother with a string of hit musicals behind her.
Meanwhile Oscar-winner Anjelica Huston adds her heavyweight status to the role of a legendary Broadway producer.
Despite the inevitable comparisons to Glee, the show’s producers say that the two series are not the same.
Last month executive producer Craig Zadan addressed this issue at the Television Critics Association press tour in Los Angeles.
Speaking about the creator of Glee, he said: ‘When Ryan Murphy did Glee, he broke a great barrier.
‘He allowed networks to really believe that there was room for a dramatic comedy in one show week after week
‘I don’t think any of us feel that the show is like Glee but we feel grateful to Glee for opening that door.’
NBC clearly has high hopes for the show.
Network bosses have planned to give it the best possible start by airing the debut on Monday evening after the hit series, The Voice.
Smash starts on Monday January 6 at 10/9 c.
