It has been a difficult year for the Shriver-Schwarzenegger family so a getaway to the tropical island of Maui in Hawaii must have come as a welcome break.

Maria Shriver was seen strolling along the beach hand-in-hand with Christina, 20, her daughter with disgraced politician and Terminator star Arnold Schwarzenegger today.

Dressed in a long black kaftan and wide-brimmed black hat, Maria looked sombre as she walked along the shore with Christina who was wearing a white bikini and towel around her waist.

The 56-year-old journalist, who is the process of divorcing her husband of 25 years after discovering he had fathered a love child with their maid, appeared to be deep in conversation with her daughter.

There had been rumours that Maria was ready to forgive Arnold and take him back, however the Terminator star seemed to pour cold water on that notion when he mentioned their divorce while chatting to Mario Lopez on Extra.

He said: 'We work together even though we're going through a divorce. We make sure that the kids grow up to be really good human beings.'

Maria arrived in Hawaii on Friday accompanied by her youngest child, 14-year-old Christopher and a pal.

Her oldest daughter Katherine, 22, and son Patrick, 18, do not appear to be joining her on this vacation.

It was recently revealed that Maria has been in discussions Oprah Winfrey about doing a news/special interest driven show for her struggling TV channel, OWN.

An insider told Radaronline: 'Maria definitely wants to get back to work, but she has to make sure that it's the right project. With her son Patrick about to graduate from high school in the next few months, she will have only one other child, Christopher, living at home with her.'

The source added: 'Maria has been assured that any project she would do for OWN would be filmed in Los Angeles as Oprah is cognizant of the fact that Maria needs to be close to her son.'
