Three's a crowd! Ashley Tisdale's friend plays gooseberry as bikini-clad star hits the beach with boyfriend Christopher French

It has long been said that three is a crowd.

But that did not stop Ashley Tisdale's friend playing gooseberry when the actress went to the beach with her beau in California at the weekend.

The High School Musical favourite was spotted sharing a word with Christopher French while her cohort complacently lay down behind her.

Perhaps the couple were hatching a plan to spend some time alone after their sun worshiping session in the posh celebrity enclave of Malibu.

If that was the idea it did not seem to work out, as they were later spotted indulging themselves by heading for a meal at a cosy diner.

The 27-year-old former Disney kid looked in fine figure in a skimpy grey bikini, with the top's trendy tassels drawing attention to her enviable charms.

And she must have been pleased with her racy ensemble, as she also wore a comically oversized baseball cap which was adorned with a metal Vogue logo.

It seems the titanic trio were having a great time together, as Ashley tweeted: 'Beach day with my beach bums.'

Later she teased her 9.5m strong legion of followers even more, telling them: 'What a Beautiful Saturday :) time to sweat.'

Ashley is entitled to relax follow the commercial, if not critical, success of her April feature Scary Movie 5, which took $48m off a $20m budget.

However the saucy starlet has not been resting on her laurels, and has been working hard in the studio in recent weeks to craft a follow up to her lightly regarded 2009 album Guilty Pleasure.

She is often seen hitting the gym hard and appears to work on her toned figure daily.

But on Saturday Ashley Tisdale appeared to take a break from her fitness regime showing off her flawless shape while soaking up the sunshine in Santa Barbara.

The 26-year-old former High School Musical star donned a skimpy printed bikini for the sunbaking session.

The colours of the pattern bikini complemented Ashley’s skin colouring and the cut of the two-piece showed off her curves to perfection.

The actress was enjoyed her lazy day by the pool with her pet pooch - who jumped up onto her sun-lounger to get the best view.

As well as topping up her tan Ashley also cooled off with a dip in the pool.

The star has been busy with a few projects - she recently posed in a variety of bikinis for a new campaign for OP, Ocean Pacific clothing range.

Ashley joined Modern Family actress Sarah Hyland in posing in colourful outfits and roller skates on the beach.

And she works hard to keep herself in shape, recently saying: 'I love kickboxing. It’s great for your abs and your whole body.

'Weight training is great for toning up and leaning up without bulking up. But the kickboxing is really amazing because it just works everything at once.'
