Marion Cotillard takes a sprint in 1920s evening dress as she films scenes with Joaquin Phoenix

Her latest role has seen her dressed to the nines in 1920s attire.

But Marion Cotillard had to indulge in a less glamorous activity when she filmed scenes which saw her running frantically across a park while wearing her flapper costume.

The 36-year-old was filming scenes in Brooklyn, New York, alongside her co-star Joaquin Phoenix.

And the characters the pair portray appeared to be in a spot of trouble as they dashed down a path and over some grass, seemingly to safety.

The French actress portrays immigrant Sonya Cybulski who is tricked into a life of burlesque dancing and prostitution.

She wore a yellow silk dress and glittering sheer wrap, contrasted by red over-the-knee socks and matching shoes.

But fortunately the actress was wrapped up against the cold weather with a black coat and furry shawl.

And Joaquin, 37, was dressed as a typical 1920s gentleman in a black suit and coat, with his dark hair slicked to one side.

The pair clutched at each other as they sprinted along before stopping to ctach their breath and cool down.

The French star was obviously feeling the winter weather as she filmed in Brooklyn's Prospect Park and made sure she covered up in between takes.

In her slinky outfit, it's no surprise that Cotillard added a heavy black coat to keep her warm.

When it came to walking back to her trailer, the mother-of-one changed into a pair of brown sheepskin boots and a parka.

She was surrounded by several other female actresses who all wore the same red lipstick as her, and some even modelled the trademark headwear from the 1920s.

They also wrapped up in brown blankets as they huddled together and tried to ignore the cold weather.

Also seen on the set was Joaquin Phoenix who plays Cotillard's pimp in the film, Bruno Weis.

The actor looked very smart in a black three-piece suit, a large dark coat and a matching bowler hat.

It will be his first film since the 2008 project Two Lovers in which he starred alongside Gwyneth Paltrow.

His character in the film is challenged by Orlando the magician who is played by Jeremy Renner.

Orlando tries to save Sonya and reunite her with her sister who is being held in the confines of Ellis Island.
The actors were spotted sharing a joke together before taking some direction between scenes.

The upcoming film is yet to have been given a title but is being directed by James Gray and is rumoured to be released next year.
