She's not the quintessential persona of an all-American girl.
But there is no denying that singer Ke$ha is one of few who is currently at the helm of the U.S pop world.
The 25-year-old shows off her curvy figure in an American flag dress and dons smudged face paint in a patriotic photoshoot for V magazine's Americana issue.
Provocatively posing for the camera, the singer's look is finished off with a pair of cowboys boots, an embossed brown belt and a silver bull ring on her finger.
In an interview with the magazine, Ke$ha says she feels more like the rebellious one out of her pop star counterparts.
'I do feel like there are the pop stars of the world and then I’m like their dirty little sister, running around with s*** on my face in combat boots because I can’t walk in heels,' she said.
She told the publication that like with everything in her life, she's worked incredibly hard to get where she is and that includes being in charge of all of her own material.
'Everything I sing, I write,' she said. 'Love it or hate it, it all comes from me.'
Ke$ha, who was born in Los Angeles and moved to Nashville, Tennessee as a young child, splits her time between both the South and the West Coast.
In Tennessee she has a home in the woods, where she says she is happy to remain out of the limelight, and where she and her friends often party hard.
'I have wild, wild nights there,' she revealed to the magazine. 'But my friends and I are all really private. We get fucking crazy, but you’re not going to see me stumbling out of nightclubs.'
Unlike many of her famous pop colleagues, Ke$ha doesn't require a group of stylists or a large entourage.
She says that that is important in conveying the message that 'you don’t have to be rich and you can still be successful.'
'I try to include my fans in my message,' she said. 'I do feel like there is an element of what I’m doing that is about where I come from, which is working-class.
'I was never the cool kid, I was never hot in high school. I was never popular.'
Meanwhile recently Ke$ha attracted attention for one very wrong reason.
The 'Tik Tok' singer clearly couldn't wait to go to the bathroom while stuck in a traffic jam.
But instead of hiding her embarrassing moment, she tweeted the news for all the world to see.
She posted a photo of herself squatting on the street this morning with the caption: 'Pee pee on the street. PoPo come and get me if you can find me.'
Ke$ha added: 'I blame traffic.'
Her taunt to the police was for a very good reason, given that she could have been charged with a $270 fine per California law.
The outspoken singer was equally brazen at the Coachella music festival recently, when she walked around in a pair of shorts that were so brief they resembled underwear.
She also wasn't shy about revealing how she really feels about being a female musician.
She told Glamour magazine: 'I know that I have balls. I have bigger balls than a lot of the men that I meet.
'I'm just a ballsy motherf****r. I'm not afraid of pushing boundaries.
'That's what you have to do to become an icon.'
